World Bamboo Day - Recognizing the Benefits of Bamboo Charcoal

September 20, 2017

Today, September 18th is World Bamboo Day, dedicated towards raising awareness and celebrating the benefits that this plant can have towards cross cutting global issues, from a reduction in poverty, to forest landscape restoration (as recognized by organizations including FAO and the World Resources Institute), to reducing deforestation through the provision of a "deforestation-free" fiber to major markets and industries around the world.

At EcoPlanet Core Carbon, with our current focus on the dissemination of our innovative and low footprint bamboo carbonization technology, we are celebrating the many uses of a high grade and specialized bamboo charcoal!

Of course, in its raw form bamboo charcoal has the potential to transform communities and landscapes. Our parent company, EcoPlanet Bamboo, is currently working towards achieving a move towards a green, sustainable bamboo charcoal with a number of sub-Saharan countries, nations where many households still rely on wood and charcoal as their primary source of fuel for their heating and cooking needs. This potential is of course significant.

However we are focused on a different aspect - markets where the right grade of bamboo charcoal has a range of applications that wouldn't automatically be associated with the first thought of either bamboo, or charcoal!. This specialist, high grade substance requires processing at extremely high heat and in the absence of oxygen and has a number of unique and extremely beneficial properties due to its high fixed carbon content and the high surface area of its porous structure. The below graphic illustrates just a few of the uses of our various products.

For World Bamboo Day we are celebrating through the first widespread distribution of these products, to customers across South Africa and beyond, and, along with each distribution, raising a little more awareness as to the importance, and potential of this magnificent plant!
